Background

Dr. Merle Holland

Clinical Psychologist

I have been a consultant to an independent school and in private practice since 1987 and work with children, adolescents, adults, and families. I received my undergraduate degree from The University of Pennsylvania, my master's from New York University, and my doctorate from The University of Houston.

I have worked extensively with children and families of children with language and learning differences, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, OCD, Tourette's, and Autistic Spectrum Disorders.  The focus of my practice has been on helping children and parents, especially mothers, cope with these difficulties.  I have led social skill/pragmatic language groups and wrote a monthly column on social skills for ADDitude magazine. For years I led Mothering Groups in which the unique needs of mothers could be addressed.

While much of my practice focus is on special needs individuals and their families, I have also worked extensively to help families through divorce, remarriage, step parenting, loss of a child, marital issues caused by difficult children, and parenting issues caused by different parenting styles and histories.

I have been Program Chairman, Vice President and on the Board of Directors for the International Dyslexia Association - Houston Branch, on the Board of Directors of The Parish School, an independent school for children with language and learning disorders, and on the Advisory Board of Kesher, an organization promoting religious education for special needs children. I have been an Adjunct Professor in the School of Education at The University of St. Thomas in Houston and have made presentations on a variety of topics related to parenting and children on a local, state and national level.
